Useful Tool, Uncomfortable Questions

Over the past two years, artificial intelligence has quietly entered our architectural studio.

Not in a dramatic “robots replacing architects” kind of way, but in dozens of small, practical ways that make everyday work faster.

Before going further, it is worth clarifying what I mean by “AI”. The term has become something of a blanket label for a wide range of technologies. In our studio, we are mainly referring to three categories of tools. Large language models that help analyse and generate text, image generation tools that assist with visualisation, and automation tools that help organise and process information across different software systems.

None of these tools design buildings on their own. What they do well is assist with the processing and organisation of information.

Like most small practices, we operate in a competitive environment. Efficiency has always been one of the ways smaller firms survive. If a larger practice can throw ten people at a project, a small studio needs to be clever about how it works.

AI tools are increasingly becoming part of that toolkit.

They can help summarise documents, organise information, cross-check written material, draft early written content, and assist with image generation. We are also beginning to use them in smaller ways throughout the practice. Reviewing design options, testing reasoning around planning or code interpretation, helping structure marketing and communication, and occasionally acting as a sounding board when navigating conflict or complex conversations.

Many of these tasks are not the core creative work of architecture. They are the administrative and organisational layers that sit around it.

When those tasks become faster, it creates more space for design thinking and coordination.

In theory, this should be good news for clients. The less time architects spend on repetitive tasks, the more time we can spend solving the problems that actually shape the quality of a building.

One of the more surprising ways AI has entered our workflow is in helping navigate bureaucracy.

Architecture today operates inside a dense web of planning schemes, building regulations, consultant reports, contracts, and council correspondence. Each project requires architects to absorb and interpret large volumes of written material before any design decision can be made with confidence.

Over time, that administrative burden has grown significantly. A large portion of architectural work now involves interpreting regulations, cross-checking requirements, and responding to formal processes that sit around the design itself.

Used carefully, AI tools can help process that information more efficiently.

They can assist in summarising long documents, identifying relevant clauses in regulations, and organising information across multiple sources. This does not remove the architect’s responsibility to verify and interpret the information, but it can significantly reduce the time spent navigating the raw material of bureaucracy.

For small practices in particular, this matters. Every hour spent deciphering planning controls or contract language is an hour not spent designing.

If used critically and with proper fact checking, AI can become a practical tool for helping architects reclaim some of that time.

At the same time, the technology raises questions the profession has not yet fully answered.

One of the most immediate relates to early career architects.

Historically, many graduates learned the profession through the slower, more manual work that happens early in a project. Building models. Drafting drawings. Preparing renders. Coordinating documentation. These tasks were not glamorous, but they were how people learned the logic of buildings and construction.

If some of those tasks become automated or significantly faster, small firms may simply need fewer hands to produce the same output. That raises an uncomfortable question for the profession. If the traditional training ground begins to disappear, where do the next generation of architects learn the craft?

The profession has not yet worked that out.

At the same time, AI is already changing how the public engages with design. Many homeowners are experimenting with image generation tools to visualise ideas for their homes. With the right prompts, these tools can produce beautifully polished images of kitchens, living rooms, or entire houses in seconds.

As a source of inspiration, this can be wonderful. It helps people explore possibilities and articulate what they like.

But inspiration and architecture are not the same thing.

Most AI-generated images ignore the realities that shape real buildings. Structural systems, planning regulations, energy efficiency requirements, construction tolerances, budgets, and the availability of materials rarely feature in those polished images. Geometry can look convincing at a glance but fall apart when translated into something that actually needs to be built.

In practice, AI is currently much better at enhancing images than it is at generating accurate design solutions. It can improve visualisations and help communicate ideas, but when it comes to precise modelling and documentation, manual design tools remain essential.

Another issue that sits quietly alongside all of this is environmental impact.

Architecture is increasingly focused on sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of buildings. Yet the infrastructure that powers large AI systems consumes enormous amounts of electricity and water through data centres.

For practices that care about sustainability, this creates a genuine tension.

Our studio operates around the idea of living, learning, and working in our values. Some of those values are leaving the world better than we found it, remaining eternally curious, and choosing empathy over ego.

AI sits awkwardly inside that framework.

Curiosity encourages us to explore new tools and understand how they might improve our work. Empathy reminds us that the technology will reshape industries and careers in ways that affect real people. The desire to leave the world better forces us to question the environmental cost of the systems we are beginning to rely on.

At the moment, we do not have clear answers.

Perhaps this moment in technology is similar to the arrival of cars, computers, or the internet. Each changed the way society operates, bringing enormous benefits alongside consequences that were difficult to foresee at the time.

It may be that AI will follow a similar path.

Or it may be something different entirely.

For small practices like ours, the reality is that we operate within a competitive professional environment. Refusing to engage with emerging tools entirely may not be a viable option if it means slowly making our work less competitive.

So for now, we approach the technology with curiosity, caution, and a healthy amount of critical thinking.

 

Architecture has always been shaped by new tools. From hand drafting to CAD, from physical models to BIM, each shift has changed how architects work.

AI is simply the next stage of that evolution.

But tools alone do not make architecture better.

The responsibility still sits with the architect. To understand context, interpret constraints, and make decisions that lead to buildings that are safe, buildable, and meaningful for the people who inhabit them.

AI might make some parts of that work faster.

It does not make the responsibility any lighter.

And perhaps the most honest answer for now is that we are still working out what it means.

Like many waves of technological change before it, this one may not be something we fully control. It may simply be something we learn to navigate.

The challenge for architects will be making sure that, whatever tools we use, the work we produce still reflects the values we claim to stand for.
